Research Project: Climate Change and Its Impact on Predicting Codling Moth Emergence

Location: Temperate Tree Fruit and Vegetable Research

Project Number: 2092-22430-002-019-T
Project Type: Trust Fund Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Mar 1, 2015
End Date: Feb 29, 2020

Objective:
Evaluate whether new patterns in winter and spring weather is affecting the phenology of codling moth in California pear production regions.

Approach:
Weather data will be analyzed for a select group of stations in California to summarize degree day accumulations for the past 10 years from January to May. The amplitude and duration of ‘abnormal’ warm events will be characterized for each site-year. Studies with field-collected insects will be conducted with environmental chambers programmed to reflect a range of these warm temperature events and the timing of emergence of post-diapausing larvae will be measured and compared with insects exposed to a historical data set of temperatures. First catch and emergence curves for field populations of codling moth will be determined with trap catch data from sites distributed throughout the pear production in California and compared with phenology models listed online.
