Objective:
The ultimate goal of this project is to evaluate and provide improved lines of fish for potential incorporation into the Clear Springs Broodstock program, evaluate feeding and rearing strategies, and develop and test alternative plant-based diets in Clear Springs’ commercial rearing environment.

Approach:
Collaborative research will focus on three related goals: 1) formulating and testing diets with reduced use of fishmeal, 2) the production and performance evaluation of families on these newly formulated diets, and 3) the utilization of these feeds and fish under commercial conditions. These diets and selected families will then be evaluated and undergo further selection at Clear Springs for growth on commercial and plant-based diets, body morphology, and disease resistance. Diets and trout families that are amendable to commercial production will then be used by Clear Springs for commercial production. Trials for determining the best management practices for utilizing both improved genetic stocks and improved feeds will done in the serial re-use flow through system maintained by the USDA, Agricultural Research Service (ARS) at the Clear Springs Facility (CSF) site.
