Research Project: Improvement of Hard Winter Wheat for FHB Resistance

Location: Hard Winter Wheat Genetics Research

Project Number: 3020-21000-011-007-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2014
End Date: Aug 30, 2019

Objective:
The objectives of this cooperative research project are: 1) transfer Fhb1 and other QTLs from Asian sources to US hard winter wheat to develop highly FHB-resistant germplasm and cultivars; and 2) develop next generation markers for FHB resistance QTLs from different sources.

Approach:
High-throughput next generation sequencing technology will be used to identify genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS) markers linked to FHB resistance QTLs and to develop breeder-friendly SNP markers for marker-assisted breeding. Pyramid the QTLs into adapted US hard winter wheat cultivars using marker-assisted backcrossing to develop hard winter wheat cultivars/germplasm with high levels of FHB resistance.
