This project seeks to integrate new tools and develop new bean lines with greater tolerance to drought and heat stress in Central America and in Eastern and Southern Africa. The project will integrate multiple mutually supportive efforts to accelerate bean breeding through development of Phenomics, Genomics, Breeding, and impact assessment tools to accelerate the crop improvement process.
The project will develop new traits for heat and drought tolerance in common bean using crop physiology, phenotyping platforms, and genomic tools to greatly accelerate breeding progress by targeting specific traits and integrating them into conventional breeding efforts via marker-assisted breeding, trait phenotyping, and trait-based selection.
