The overall approach relies on molecular genetic and genomic analyses of existing soybean lines containing the high stearic acid trait, development of molecular marker resources to support trait introgression into elite soybean germplasm for trait stability experiments, and breeding efforts to determine impacts on yield for the trait. In addition, new sources of the trait will be identified through mutagenesis experiments on soybean lines with an existing elevated stearic acid phenotype. Soybean breeding efforts will focus on moving the high stearic acid trait between maturity groups and incorporating mutant alleles of the FAD3 genes to combine the trait with the low linolenic acid trait. Finally, soybean germplasm containing the high stearic acid trait will be combined with the high oleic acid trait to evaluate novel fatty acid profiles for soybean oil.
