Biologically Based Fertilizer Recommendations to Meet Yield Expectations and Preserve Water Quality
Plant Science Research
Project Number: 6070-11000-009-02
Interagency Reimbursable Agreement
Start Date: Oct 01, 2013
End Date: Aug 31, 2017
Develop a practical decision support system to improve N fertilizer recommendations for corn in the Chesapeake Bay and Albemarle-Pamlico Sound Watersheds based on a biologically based soil test that can predict N mineralized from SOM during the growing season and from rapidly decomposable substrates supplied prior to the growing season (e.g. cover crops, previous crop residues, manure additions, etc.).
Research will evaluate N supplied to corn in field experiments in North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania and in greenhouse and laboratory investigations in North Carolina. Crop yield responses will be evaluated with pre-season flush of CO2, permanganate oxidizable C, pre-sidedress nitrate test, and end-of-season basal stalk nitrate test.
