Research Project: Implications of Climatic Variability on Agricultural Productivity and Resource Conservation in Semiarid Agro-Ecosystems

Location: Rangeland Resources Research

Project Number: 5409-21610-001-10
Project Type: Specific Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 15, 2013
End Date: Sep 14, 2018

Objective:
1) Determine new technologies and management practices that address key problems facing agricultural production and resource conservation in semiarid ecosystems. 2) Create new knowledge of processes and systems central to the long-term sustainability of US agriculture, with particular emphasis on livestock production in shortgrass steppe. 3) Assess mitigation and adaptation practices of semiarid agro-ecosystems to climatic variability and climate change. 4) Provide educational and outreach products to K-20, customers, stakeholders and the general public relevant to sustaining ecological integrity, ecosystem health and economic opportunity in the face of increasing climatic variability.

Approach:
Utilize existing historical long term data sets, as well as ongoing studies, and new experiments to evaluate the influence of climatic variability and climate change on sustainability of agro-ecosystem productivity, function and structure through natural resource management. Experiments will be designed to investigate the large scale effects of adaptive management for assessing mitigation and adaptation of the shortgrass steppe rangeland ecosystem to climatic variability and climate change. Experiments will be designed to investigate the influence of drought and drought recovery on the sustainability of agricultural productivity from semiarid agro-ecosystems. Delivery of key research findings through technology transfer will encompass educational, extension and outreach activities via efforts centered at the CSU Shortgrass Steppe Research and Interpretation Center (SGS-RIC), located on the USDA-ARS Central Plains Experimental Range (CPER), Nunn, CO.
