Research Project: Evaluation of Peanut Seeds to Determine Elevated Folate Levels

Location: Peanut Research

Project Number: 6604-21000-004-03
Project Type: Specific Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: May 01, 2014
End Date: Jun 30, 2017

Objective:
Identify peanut genotypes with elevated folate levels in seeds, compared to publically-released peanut varieties, through the evaluation of transformed peanuts utilizing a newly developed gene-transfer method and novel genetic lines through traditional breeding.

Approach:
Improved germplasm from ongoing ARS biotechnology and breeding programs will be grown in greenhouse, small sub-plots in the field, or under environmental controlled small plots. Mature peanut seeds will be collected at the end of the growing season and treated according to industry standards. Individual seeds or pooled seeds of the same peanut genotype will be subjected to folate analysis utilizing microbiologic assay and HPLC/MS analysis. Results will be subjected to statistical analysis. Seeds with elevated folate levels will be utilized in peanut breeding program.
