Research Project: Use of Apex Model for Simulation of Nitrogen Dynamics and Cover Crops in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed

Location: Crop Systems & Global Change

Project Number: 1245-61660-007-15
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement

Start Date: Sep 01, 2013
End Date: Dec 31, 2014

Objective:
Carry out evaluations of cover crop conservation practice effects on nitrogen and phosphorus transport to the bay for the Chesapeake Bay watershed using Conservation Effects Assessment Project (CEAP) technologies. Use results to evaluate the EPA Bay model for cover crop practices.

Approach:
Define and parameterize scenarios for more locations in the Chesapeake Bay watershed, e.g., information on tillage, nutrient application, crops, and planting dates need to be collected. Carry out model runs using the Agricultural Productivity Extender (APEX) and compare to existing data or runs reviewed by expert panels. Set up management practice scenarios to determine effects of management on nutrient and sediment loss at the edge-of-field or bottom-of-root zone boundary. Analyze results.
