Biological and Cultural Control of Pre and Post-Harvest Fruit Rot in Berry Crops in the Pacific Northwest

Objective 1. Investigate the epidemiology of sclerotial formation, maturation and sporulation of fruit rot organisms.
1a. Understand the infection, development and sporulation of Botrytis sclerotia in the red raspberry system typical of northern Washington.
1b. Define the various stages of pseudosclerotial development with respect to environmental factors in the mummy berry, Monilinia vaccinii-corymbosi, system.
Objective 2. Investigate the use of biological control organisms for the management of fruit rots in small fruits.
2a. Isolate and identify organisms associated with from berries that have reduced incidence or levels of fruit rot in Oregon (Willamette Valley) and Washington (Fraser and Skagit Valleys).
2b. Evaluate organisms, either isolated under objective 1 or commercial products, for efficacy in reducing growth of fruit rot pathogens in in-vitro assays.
2c. Carry out greenhouse tests with organisms or products that show potential in the in vitro assays.
Objective 3. Evaluate cultural practices that reduce primary inoculum in the field for reducing the level of fruit rot in berry crops in Oregon and Washington as in 2a.
Objective 1. Careful regular observations of commercial and experimental plantings recording time of sclerotial development and associated weather parameters. Inoculation of raspberries and incubation of field material under various laboratory conditions. Laboratory incubation of mummified fruit under different light regimes.
Objective 2. Isolation and identification of microorganisms from surfaces of berries that have reduced or completely lack fruit rot in unsprayed field plots in Oregon and Washington. In vitro assays with candidate biological control organisms and commercial products to examine their affect on fruit rot pathogens.
Objective 3. Removal of infected red raspberry canes at different times of the year with evaluation of incidence and severity of fruit rots. Mulching of experimental and commercial blueberry plantings at different times of the year with evaluation of apothcial emergence. Evaluation of current commercial cultural practices for fruit rot management.
