Research Project: Genetics and Evolution of Cereal Rust Fungi

Location: Cereal Disease Laboratory

Project Number: 5062-21220-021-20
Project Type: Specific Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 01, 2013
End Date: Jul 31, 2015

Objective:
Develop biological materials for genetic analysis of P. graminis, P. hordei and P. striiformis; 2) Make collections of cereal rust fungi and related rust fungi; 3) Characterize the biology, morphology and nuclear states of selected rust fungi including P. striiformis and P. coronata; 4) documentation and training of CDL staff on microscopic techniques.

Approach:
Collections of cereal rust fungi and related rust fungi will be made. Pure lines of selected collections of Puccinia graminis, P. hordei, and P. striiformis will be developed. Biological materials will be prepared and inoculations of appropriate hosts will be carried out in order to develop populations for genetic analysis and hybridization experiments. Experiments will be performed to define host range, morphological characters, nuclear states, and mechanism of genetic transfer.
