Research Project: Land-Potential Knowledge System-Landpks

Location: Range Management Research

Project Number: 3050-11210-007-28
Project Type: Reimbursable

Start Date: Jan 01, 2013
End Date: Sep 29, 2017

Objective:
To support long-term, sustainable increases in productivity and biodiversity conservation through land-use planning and better land management.

Approach:
LandPKS will support long-term, sustainable increases in productivity and biodiversity conservation by: Collecting, sharing, and integrating local and scientific knowledge about the potential productivity, biodiversity, and resilience of specific types of land for local, regional, and global application. Increasing access of governments, farmers, and pastoralists to local and scientific knowledge from all over the world that is relevant to specific types of land. Promoting social innovation by connecting farmers with similar land types and access to inputs for peer-to-peer learning. Promoting evidence-based, on-farm technological innovation through both social innovation and by increasing the ability of farmers and other land managers to compare and share the successes and failures of new technologies on similar types of land. Increasing gender equality by providing women farmers improved access to knowledge and information, even where their physical movement is limited. LandPKS will integrate information from existing natural resource databases with field data and local knowledge collected by local partnering institutions. Cellphone technologies will assist in data collection and peer-to-peer information sharing. Geospatial analysis, mapping, and decision tools will support land use planning, climate change adaptation strategies, and targeted interventions by government authorities and decision-makers. Pilot implementation to be carried on in Northern Kenya and Namibia per the SOW agreed to between USAID and ARS.
