Research Project: Evaluation of Cost Effective Management of Imported Fire Ants in Nursery Crops

Location: Floral and Nursery Plants Research Unit

Project Number: 1230-21000-062-02
Project Type: Specific Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 01, 2013
End Date: Jul 30, 2018

Objective:
To evaluate pyrethroid band treatments with targeted mound injections to facilitate rapid multiple-plant-treatments at reduced application cost and extended certification period, and evaluate pre-harvest individual-tree chemigation treatments using irrigation devices (e.g., buckets, TreeRings) normally used by nursery growers to facilitate mechanized plant harvest.

Approach:
Evaluate methods for control of imported fire ants on field-grown nursery stock that has reduced pesticide application cost and exposure. Use research findings to facilitate Federal plant certification.
