Start Date: May 05, 2013
End Date: May 04, 2015
(1) The cooperative nursery is called the North American Barley Scab Evaluation Nursery (NABSEN). The NABSEN will contain the most advanced barley lines with putative FHB resistance and will be grown in eight locations across the region where FHB is affecting the crop. There will be a mix of locations for the NABSEN, with some being mist irrigated and inoculated and others grown under natural environmental conditions. Data will be collected on FHB severity, FHB incidence and heading date. Samples will also be tested for DON content. (2) Homozygous transgenic lines from the three labs (L. Dahleen (USDA-ARS-Fargo, ND), R. Skadsen (USDA-ARS-Madison, WI) and T. Abebe (UNI)) will be tested in field plots in the Langdon, ND disease nursery. Two transgenic lines with significant levels of resistance confirmed in multiple trials will be used in marker assisted backcrossing into the elite ND breeding line ND20448 and the recently released FHB resistant cultivar Quest for evaluation beginning in 2013.
