Research Project: Identification and Characterization of Resistance to Fusarium Head Blight in Wheat and Its Relatives Project Number: 0500-00053-003-52
Project Type: Grant

Start Date: May 01, 2013
End Date: Apr 30, 2015

Objective:
(1) a) Introgress FHB resistance QTL from common wheat into adapted durum wheat backgrounds; b) Develop durum germplasm with improved resistance to FHB; and c) Determine the effect of D-genome chromosomes on FHB resistance in durum. (2) Find more effective and diversified sources of resistance to manage this disease.

Approach:
(1) Molecular marker analysis and disease screening will be performed to select resistant individuals. Chromosome constitutions of resistant individuals will be determined by cytogenetic analysis. (2 )a) Incorporate alien FHB resistance genes into adapted spring wheat genotypes; b) Position the alien chromatin containing FHB resistance genes transferred to the wheat genome and reduce linkage drag associated with alien chromatin if necessary; and c) Develop FHB-resistant germplasm lines usable in spring wheat breeding.
