Evaluate Association-Selection Mapping as an experimental approach for characterizing the genetic architecture of adaptation. Identify geoclimatic responsive haplotypes limiting temperate adaptation and maize improvement.

1) Use response to artificial selection (RAS) mapping in two tropical populations to characterize the genetic architecture of adaptation: the tropical Tusón population which was adapted to central Iowa, and the tropical synthetic (TropicS) population derived from seven tropical inbred lines will be subjected to selection in each of eight environments comprising a latitudinal transect from Wisconsin to Puerto Rico. I will conduct two cycles of selection in TropicS for adaptation to a winter environment (Puerto Rico or Mexico). 2) Determine whether the effect of photoperiod on time to maturity conceals the expression of important traits (i.e. kernel composition) and whether useful genetic variation is linked to maladapted genes and is lost due to selection against adaptation by creating near-isogenic lines capturing allelic series (NILAS) for four photoperiod-sensitive maize loci genomic and evaluating the NILAS in the same set of eight environments. ARS will evaluate the NILAS in a winter environment (Puerto Rico or Mexico) and analyze the kernel composition data.
