The role of the National Laboratory for Agriculture and the Environment (NLAE) will be to support the database efforts for the project. In the past five years, NLAE has developed a GIS-based SQL database applicable to watershed scale data and has extended this database to include plot scale and energy balance/gas flux data. The database is structured around the concept of a methods catalog which describes the methods used for each parameter along with the quality assurance methods. This allows for each data entry to be tagged with a specific method and allows for investigators across locations to use their current techniques. Data are also tagged with a geographic location and a time stamp in order to facilitate data retrieval and data queries by location, time period, data element, or method. The third aspect of the data base is the data display method which allows an investigator to examine their data without extensive downloads. All of this is accessible through a web-based Java script portal that is available for all researchers. Each investigator will be able to enter their own data into the database and describe their own methods for the experimental procedures. Personnel at NLAE would be providing the training for the use of the database and responsible for the data quality screening. All measured data will be catalogued for use in modeling in Years 1 through 4. Database development for this project will extend the existing geospatial databases developed for watershed and plot-scale data. The database structure consists of a methods catalog which allows each project to define the methods and the quality assurance for each parameter, then collected from a variety of different temporal and spatial scales, and data visualization and retrieval system which allows extraction of the data from any time period or location. All data elements are part of the structured query language linked with geospatial coordinates. The current database structure will be modified to accommodate the needs of this project.
