Research Project: Overcoming Obstacles for Implementation of Anaerobic Soil Disinfestation (Asd)

Location: Subtropical Plant Pathology Research

Project Number: 6618-22000-041-10
Project Type: Reimbursable

Start Date: Aug 01, 2013
End Date: Jul 31, 2015

Objective:
To address grower issues that prevent the adoption of anaerobic soil disinfestations (ASB) for vegetable production.

Approach:
A series of field trials will be conducted to determine if alternative nitrogen sources can be used to replace the use of composted broiler litter (CBL) as a source of N and for increasing water holding capacity of sandy soils. Quantities of inputs will be used that are as effective as CBL in the generation of anaerobicity while minimizing the potential food safety risk that growers have indicated as a concern. Populations of potential human pathogens will be monitored via direct plating and molecular methods. These include logistics of amendment application and concerns surrounding the use of composted broiler litter as an input.
