Objective:
The objective of this Center for Disease Control (CDC) funded extramural research project is to revised poultry slaughter procedure to reduce exposure to zoonotic H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza virus and reduce the number of human zoonotic infections.

Approach:
ARS scientists will train native Egyptian scientists at National Laboratory of Quality Poultry Production (NLQP) in a revised poultry slaughter procedure to reduce aerosol generation. The procedure was developed in ARS laboratory. After training, the native Egyptian scientists will conduct educational focus groups in three villages, teaching women in Arabic the new slaughter procedure for chickens and ducks, and receive feedback for improvements. Three major education principles will be taught: slaughter in a covered container, use a closure that is slide –off the container, and heated water is poured into the container to kill any airborne pathogens.
