Research Project: Pastureland Conservation Effects Assessment Project

Location: Northern Great Plains Research Laboratory

Project Number: 3064-21310-002-06
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement

Start Date: Jun 01, 2013
End Date: Dec 31, 2014

Objective:
Provide clear, concise and relevant datasets (existing and/or new) to NRCS for use in CEAP pastureland modeling, and for ARS scientist review of model outputs using provided datasets and constructed conservation scenarios on pasturelands.

Approach:
We will Identify existing pasture datasets at several ARS locations in the U.S., enter the data and documentation into database, and provide the data to NRCS for parameterizing and validating pasture model such as APEX, ALMANAC, and RHEM, and assess accuracy of model output for meeting CEAP objectives. We will also conduct rainfall simulation research on pastureland at Mandan and measure water runoff, soil erosion, and vegetation characteristics and use the data to test the RHEM model on pastureland.
