Test repellent and attractant as means to disrupt colonization of pear orchards by overwintered pear psylla, and to disrupt or delay mating of overwintered psylla.
1b.Approach (from AD-416):
Laboratory and field trials will be done using a psyllid repellent being developed by ISCA Technologies, to determine if the product is repellent to pear paylla. Laboratory assays will be done using a sex pheromone attractant of pear psylla to determine whether saturation of the air with this product leads to delays in males locating females, and in inseminating females.
The work summarized in this progress report relates to objectives number 3 and 6 in the Project Plan for 001-00D: 3. Discover and develop chemical attractants for codling moth, fruit flies, pear psylla, and other insect pests of temperate tree fruits and their natural enemies. 6. Develop applications of insect pathogens, attract and kill technology and disruption techniques to control codling moth and other pests of temperate tree fruits.
Field trials were done with two compounds found to be repellent to other psyllid species. One compound showed repellent activity in laboratory assays. However, field trials failed to show that either compound was repellent enough to affect field behavior of psyllids. Research is ongoing to develop the technological means for dispensing the sex pheromone attractant of pear psylla in a manner which provides the best opportunity for disrupting mating of the psyllid.
