EMBRAPA isolated (and patented) three male-specific compounds from the rice stalk stink bug that could serve as sex pheromone (Brazil Patent - PI0604617-7). These compounds were tentatively identified as isomers of 4-(1’,5’-dimethyl-4’-hexenyl)-1-methyl-2-cyclohexen-1-ol but their relative and absolute configurations remain unknown, and field tests have not been conducted to validate attractiveness of these compounds to the rice stalk stink bug. ARS has the expertise to produce the sex pheromone and its stereoisomers which will be used to identify the absolute configuration of the pheromone produced by the insect and ARS will also help to find if single isomers or mixtures can be used to attract this insect in laboratory and field experiments.
