Research Project: Development of a Rapid Ecoregional Assessment for the Chihuahuan Desert – Support and Conceptual Modeling

Location: Range Management Research

2013 Annual Report

1a.Objectives (from AD-416):
The objective of this cooperative project is to develop a rapid ecoregional assessment (REA) for the Chihuahuan Desert ecoregion for the Bureau of Land Management in New Mexico (NM-BLM). This project will encompass working with NM-BLM in specifying the components of the REA, and in cooperation with the Jornada, conduct conceptual modeling, perform associated GIS modeling/analysis, and compile the final REA report.

1b.Approach (from AD-416):
ARS and the Cooperator will jointly work with NM-BLM to specify the management questions, conservation elements, and change agents to be addressed in the REA. The cooperator will work with Jornada staff to.
1)survey and gather available knowledge and information,.
2)develop conceptual models linking the status and trend of the conservation elements to the change agents,.
3)conduct GIS modeling/analysis of each conservation element to answer the management questions, and.
4)compile the final REA report.

3.Progress Report:

In 2013 we worked with NM-BLM to specify the management questions, conservation elements, and change agents to be addressed in the Regional Ecological Assessment (REA). We initiated the development of conceptual models linking the status and trend of the conservation elements to the change agents and GIS modeling/analysis of each conservation element to answer the management questions.
