1a.Objectives (from AD-416):
Identify all volatiles from contaminated pistachios and delineate potential signature volatiles to be used for detection purposes
1b.Approach (from AD-416):
Using established protocols developed in and routinely used in this lab analyze the volatile emission of contaminated and uncontaminated pistachios over time and at varying contamination levels.
ARS researchers have performed extensive analyses of pistachio-based volatile emissions under varying treatment conditions including ex situ undamaged, damaged, and mummy pistachios, and in situ undamaged and damaged pistachios. The current in situ analyses will include evaluation of the phenological differences of the pistachio emissions and associated damaged product. Important volatiles identified from these analyses will be loaded onto the portable gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer and field-tested later this year. This project directly relates to Objectives 1 and 2 of the parent project.
