A newly developed redbay ambrosia beetle (RAB) lure in commercial production by Synergy is based on distilled cubeb oil. The company believes this product may be further improved by identifying the specific fractions most attractive to RAB, but populations of RAB are too remote for Synergy staff to directly bioassay their products. The company also has reason to expect copaiba oil to be potentially useful for RAB lure production. ARS Scientist-Miami, FL has agreed to conduct field and laboratory research to evaluate individual fractions of cubeb and copaiba oil for RAB attraction. Specifically, research will consist of electroantennography to assess olfactory response and laboratory bioassays and/or field tests to assess behavioral response. By identifying RAB attractive compounds, basic insect chemical ecology will be advanced while providing practical information for the development of an improved montoring tool.
