Assessing the Quality of Breast Milk
Obesity and Metabolism Research Unit
2013 Annual Report
1a.Objectives (from AD-416):
The objective of this cooperative research is to analyze breast milk samples for vitamins and minerals after lactating women have been given a 1X or 2XRDA dose of the micronutrients in order to determine the appropriate timing of breast milk collection that will reflect accurately the change in micronutrient content of milk in supplementation projects.
1b.Approach (from AD-416):
To obtain this information we will supplement 18 lactating women in Bangladesh who are likely to be depleted in MN. Mothers will spend 4 d in the family metabolic unit of International Center for Diarroheal Disease Research, Bangladesh (ICDDR,B). They will arrive fasted, and be given either 1X or 2X the RDA for lactation as a multiple MN supplement. At baseline and every time they breastfeed during 24h, they will be asked to feed the infant on one breast and collect the milk at intervals from the other breast. Meals fed will be low in MN. Samples will be analyzed separately and the 24 h secretion, intra-feed and diurnal variation of each MN determined in milk.
This project relates to Objective 1 of the in-house project to “determine the effects of specific foods, nutrients, and food components that promote health and disease prevention in at-risk populations". We have obtained Institutional Review Board permission and supplies for this project and staff traveled to Dhaka, Bangladesh, in August of this year to set up the protocols for the collection of breast milk. The breast milk collection should be complete by the end of 2013.
