Research Project: Mini-Pilot Scale Production of Biofuel and Animal Feed from Heterotrophic Algae

Location: Tropical Plant Genetic Resources and Disease Research

Project Number: 5320-21000-015-08
Project Type: Trust

Start Date: Apr 11, 2013
End Date: Dec 31, 2014

Objective:
The objective of the project is to produce mini-pilot scale levels of algae oil and algae meal from heterotrophic algae that use waste papaya fruit as a carbon source.

Approach:
The research team at PBARC has successfully grown heterotrophic algae on waste papaya fruit and recovered economic levels of algae oil and algae meal under laboratory conditions. The team now plans to produce mini-pilot scale levels of algae oil and algae meal in a 150 liter capacity bioreactor. The funds will be used to purchase the reactor and some supplies. Pacific Basin Agricultural Research Center (PBARC) has the personnel and space to run the bioreactor.
