1a.Objectives (from AD-416):
Expand on our capacity to identify cropping system practices that reduce green house gas emissions, sequester soil carbon and enhance desirable ecosystem services provided by sustainable cropping systems.
1b.Approach (from AD-416):
Using FSP and on-farm sites to conduct experiments that target the inherent differences among farming systems that vary in the linkage between carbon and nitrogen cycling in regards to greenhouse gas emissions and carbon sequestration potential.
The first year of research outlined in the project description has been initiated at the Mixture Injection Trial to evaluate the impact of various cover crop mixture, cover crop management, and poultry litter placement treatments on greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, soils are being sampled at the long-term Farming Systems Project and will be analyzed for total soil carbon and nitrogen.
