Research Project: Identification of candidate genes and alleles to improve cotton fiber quantity and quality

Location: Coastal Plain Soil, Water and Plant Conservation Research

Project Number: 6657-21000-006-16
Project Type: Reimbursable

Start Date: Jan 01, 2013
End Date: Dec 31, 2013

Objective:
Generate a whole cotton transcriptome profile of water deficit stress responsive genes.

Approach:
We will generate a comprehensive whole transcriptome profile of genes differentially expressed in response to field water deficit stress. Well-watered and water deficit stress conditions will be maintained using above ground drip irrigation under naturally occurring field conditions. In the first field experiment, we will focus on identifying genes differentially expressed in response to water deficit stress occurring during fiber development. In the second field experiment, we will focus on identifying genes differentially expressed in response to water deficit stress across a gradient of plant stress levels.
