Research Project: Genetic Dissection of Heterotic Effects in Upland Cotton

2013 Annual Report


1a.Objectives (from AD-416):
Genetically characterize yield heterotic effects in an elite Upland x elite Upland cotton cross.


1b.Approach (from AD-416):
A population of approximately 200 Upland cotton, intraspecific recombinant inbred lines will be derived at the F5. Using a single replicate, augmented design, the recombinant inbred lines will be seed increased and phenotyped for agronomic and fiber quality performance. DNA will be extracted from each line and used to genotype the population. Each recombinant inbred line will be crossed to each parent following a NC Design III mating scheme. F1 seed will be harvested and seed increased at the Cotton Winter Nursery. To provide a pure seed source, each recombinant inbred line will also be self-pollinated and seed harvested.


3.Progress Report:

This project is related to objective 2 of the in-house project: to develop new cotton genetic resources with improved fiber quality, lint yield stability, and adaptation.

Knowledge of the genetic architecture of heterosis could facilitate efforts to substantially increase yield. The primary objective of this cooperative research project is to genetically characterize heterotic effects (hybrid vigor) in upland cotton. During 2013, a bi-parental genetic population segregating for heterosis effects is being seed increased to generate sufficient seed amounts for future replicated field evaluations. Also during 2013, another genetic population is being developed to allow for the identification of chromosomal regions associated with heterosis. This research will facilitate the exploitation of heterosis as a strategy to increase yield in contemporary cotton breeding programs.
