Research Project: Accelerated development of commercial Hydrotreated Renewable Jet (HRJ) fuel from redesigned oil seed feedstock supply chains

Objective:
To 1) construct a high-density marker map for 800 diverse Brassica napus accessions from a world collection being grown by the University of Idaho and the USDA-ARS; 2) deliver processed genomic sequence to the USDA-ARS Soybase for further processing and public release; and 3) provide additional genomic sequencing as needed to validate marker/gene assignments.

Approach:
Association mapping populations, as well as advanced breeding populations, are being developed, for Camelina sativa and Brassica napus. These populations will be phenotyped for drought tolerance traits, especially cuticle associated drought tolerance. Besides field assessment for drought response, and specific hybridization studies, a major emphasis of this work will be on chemical analysis of the cuticle lipids from these accessions. Funds will be used for materials and supplies for the chemical analysis done at Purdue, and salary support for a graduate student currently working on a PhD degree at Purdue University.
