Research Project: ANALYZING LIBERIBACTER ISOLATES UNDETECTABLE BY STANDARD DIAGNOSTIC METHODS IN FLORIDA

Location: Subtropical Insects and Horticulture Research

Project Number: 6618-21000-013-44
Project Type: Reimbursable

Start Date: Sep 04, 2012
End Date: Apr 30, 2015

Objective:
1. To conduct further research on variants of Liberibacters from citrus and citrus relatives that we have identified from the surveys and to develop rapid methods for detection of these variant populations. 2. To study the biology of the variants under greenhouse conditions, determine the changes in Liberibacter populations within individual trees over time.

Approach:
Establish Liberibacter isolates of interest on lemon as source material. Graft transmit to range of standards cultivars in the greenhouse. Characterize symptom development to determine isolate x host genotype interactions. With limited number of isolates, assess potential for cross-protection from standard huanglongbing-causing strains.
