1a.Objectives (from AD-416):
The objective of this continuing project is to evaluate yield potential and suitability of currently available peanut varieties and advanced breeding lines for production in Oklahoma across several environments by utilizing small plot trials. Perhaps the most important management decision for peanut producers is variety selection. Selection of a variety that is high yielding and disease resistant is critical for profitable peanut production. Without variety testing, breeders would have no way to compare their advanced breeding lines to currently grown varieties and producers would not have an unbiased source of information when it comes to variety performance.
1b.Approach (from AD-416):
Small plot trials will be conducted in at least two major peanut growing locations throughout the state. Experimental design will be a randomized complete block design and replicated 5 times. Recently released commercial varieties from around the United States will be tested to see if they are adaptable to Oklahoma growing conditions. In addition, advanced lines from the USDA-ARS in Stillwater, OK will be evaluated.
Peanut variety trials were planted in May of 2013 at three locations across Oklahoma. ARS breeding lines included in these trials included top performers ARSOK-R35, ARSOK-V30B, and ARSOK-S140-1-ol. Other ARS breeding lines and peanut varieties currently grown in the southern plains were also included. Plots will be harvested in October 2013 and post-harvest analysis will follow.
