1a.Objectives (from AD-416):
This agreement is framed in the cooperation project whose objective is to search and study natural enemies of Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms-Laubach (Pontederiaceae), Egeria densa Planchon (Hydrocharitaceae), and Ludwigia grandiflora (Michx.) Greuter & Burdet ssp. hexapetala (Hook. & Arn.) G.L. Nesom & Kartesz (Onagraceae) in Argentina and evaluate their potential biocontrol agents in USA.
1b.Approach (from AD-416):
Cooperative efforts will be developed to locate, collect, colonize and exchange natural enemies of importance between United States of America and Argentina for the purpose of biological control of invasive plants.
This project addresses objectives 2 and 3 of the parent project which focuses on the integrated management and biological control of several aquatic invasive weeds of the Western United States, respectively. Introduced Egeria densa (Brazilian waterweed), Eichornia crassipes (water hyacinth) and Ludwigia spp. (water primrose) are all exotic plants that are originally from South America and more specifically from the Parana River region of Brazil and Argentina. Working with cooperators from Argentina, several insect natural enemies of these plants have been located, colonized and imported to the United States for more extensive evaluation under quarantine conditions. Currently, three different insects are now under evaluation in the Biological Control of Weeds Quarantine Facility within the Exotic and Invasive Weeds Research Unit in Albany, California. A herbivorous fly is being studied for its affect on Brazilian waterweed and two weevils are being assessed for both environmental safety and efficacy against water hyacinth.
