Research Project: Development and Implementation of Natural Resource Databases
2013 Annual Report


1a.Objectives (from AD-416):
Is to provide support for the existing CEAP and REAP database efforts as part of the natural resource assessments. Provide website design and development support to faciliate research data acquisition, GIS data, and research metadata from watershed and plot scale research. Provide additional support utilizing ARCGIS server based delivery systems for data and enhance data visualization tools for screening and displaying data.


1b.Approach (from AD-416):
This project facilitates the on-going development and implementation of watershed and plot-scale data collected from agronomic and natural resource research projects. This effort incorporates the existing efforts on the Conservation Effects Assessment Project (CEAP) along with the Renewable Energy Assessment Project (REAP) to enhance the development of databases for these projects and their linkage with geospatial and natural resource data. Personnel assigned to this project will work with NLAE staff and CEAP, REAP, GRACEnet, and other ARS projects to provide programmatic support for the enhancement of web-based data collection and delivery tools.


3.Progress Report:

Database management in support of ARS included the following activities:.
1)Interacted with team members to process measurement data, geodatabases, and metadata from contributing watersheds for use in the ARS project databases;.
2)Assisted in development of reports using updated computer software to reduce speed of report production;.
3)Performed feature editing on projects including metadata creation; and.
4)Presented a poster at a Cooperator's Conference and a university's Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Day. There were several efforts in the area of application development for use in the ARS data delivery systems which included:.
1)Developed applications in Javascript and Flex for data delivery with ArcGIS Server (Conservation Effects Assessment Project (CEAP), Sustaining the Earth's Watersheds--Agricultural Research Data System (STEWARDS), Plant Hardiness Zone Map, and Water Quality Portal);.
2)Ongoing development of new data delivery system for the STEWARDS application as new versions of ArcGIS Server and the Flex Application Program Interface (API) come online;.
3)Develop database access component tool to application to perform custom data extractions from SQL Server databases;.
4)Developed prototype application to expose ESRI map documents within Google Earth using Arc2Earth, HTML, and Python; and.
5)Developed processes and scripts to enable data acquisition and transfer to automate scripts to transfer data from MS Access to SQL Server via Object Linking and Embedding (OLE) connections, database testing and transfer scripts for automated database updating, database and Geodatabase extraction processes and scripts for database export, and custom Visual Basic (VB) applications for database export. These efforts have facilitated metadata management by developing custom documentation for applications, acquiring and customizing editing tools, working with off-site ARS personnel to gain understanding of Web Services design and development, and assisting in development of reports using Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services to reduce speed of report production.
