1a.Objectives (from AD-416):
To develop computer-based decision support systems for cultivar selection, insect pest sampling, and decision making in wheat and sorghum.
1b.Approach (from AD-416):
We will continue development of several computer-based agricultural decision support systems to provide wheat and sorghum growers and pest managers with up-to-date information for making decisions such as wheat variety selection, pest sampling, and pest insecticidal treatment decisions. Specifically, we will; (1) develop software using EXSYS Corvid (an expert system development tool) to develop an expert system to support decisions by wheat growers and others on best wheat cultivars to plant for resistance to insect pests and diseases, taking into consideration the range of agronomic factors that influence cultivar selection, such as geographic location, drought tolerance, acid solid tolerance; and (2) develop decision support software using EXSYS Corvid for pest management decision making for insect pests of wheat and sorghum.
During FY 2013 we developed prototype pest management decision support systems for the Russian wheat aphid in winter wheat and the sorghum headworm complex in grain sorghum. We also developed a prototype system for cultivar selection in winter wheat. The system is applicable to Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Colorado, and Nebraska. The research is providing improved tools for insect pest management in winter wheat and grain sorghum and crop management in winter wheat.
