New, Efficient Analytical Methods for Multiple Micronutrients in Breastmilk
Obesity and Metabolism Research Unit
2013 Annual Report
1a.Objectives (from AD-416):
Analyze multiple vitamins simultaneously in human milk.
1b.Approach (from AD-416):
In Phase I of this project, we will develop GC-MS and other methods for measuring multiple micronutrients simultaneously in human milk, obtain normal values from US and other samples and determine valid conditions for collecting milk from women taking micronutrient supplements.
This project relates to Objective 1 of the in-house project to “determine the effects of specific foods, nutrients, and food components that promote health and disease prevention in at-risk populations". The majority of the methods for breast milk vitamin and mineral analysis have now been established at the Western Human Nutrition Research Center (WHNRC), Davis, California. We are now analyzing micronutrients in the milk of samples collected by our colleagues in many countries to evaluate the vitamin and mineral content of human milk in different situations and after maternal supplementation. Later in the year we will analyze the samples from Bangladesh, and apply for additional funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to continue this work.
