1a.Objectives (from AD-416):
Develop a therapeutic treatment regimen to minimize the effects of aquatic fungus (Saprolegnia spp.) infecting hybrid striped bass eggs and causing economic losses to the producer.
1b.Approach (from AD-416):
Improved fungus control has been established on catfish eggs from ongoing ARS research at SNARC. Fungus on eggs also causes severe losses in the hybrid striped bass industry. Because of the time-sensitive nature of this research and the rapid hatching of eggs, this research will be conducted at the participating fish farm. Two known treatments for aquatic fungus (copper sulfate and peracetic acid) will be tested at several concentrations to determine their effectiveness.
This project investigates the effectiveness of copper sulfate and peracetic acid to prevent fungus on hybrid striped bass eggs. The cooperator provides facilities and expertise in hybrid striped bass spawning for an ARS scientist to undertake data collection and data analyses to determine effectiveness. Preliminary data suggests that copper sulfate is more effective than peracetic acid and results in higher survival of fry through the hatching stage.
