2012 Annual Report


1a.Objectives (from AD-416):
To develop maturity group III, IV and V soybeans high in oil with improved oil functionality with =65% oleic acid, =3% linolenic acid, and =7% saturates and ~20% stearic acid.


1b.Approach (from AD-416):
Utilize classical and marker assisted breeding approaches to introduce novel genes from adapted lines and plant introductions to develop high yielding varieties with: = 19% oil and = 35% protein >65% oleic acid and/or <3 % linolenic acid <7% saturates ~20% stearic acid.


3.Progress Report:

This project is related to Objective 2 of the in-house project: To discover novel genes/alleles in soybean for seed composition, determine their inheritance, determine genomic location, transfer to adapted germplasm, and release.

This new research project is a continuation of the research project 6645-21220-012-41S and has been active only since April 1, 2012. Forty high oleic acid (>70%oleic) and forty low oleic acid (<23% oleic) backcross 2 (BC2) lines from six different genetic backgrounds that are 87.5% adapted pedigree are planted and being evaluated in six environments at Stoneville, MS, Portageville, MO and Columbia, Missouri to access the effects of the FAD2-1A and FAD2-1B genes on yield, fatty acid profiles and protein and oil. High yield checks are also included in these tests.
