Research Project: BREEDING SOYBEANS WITH HIGH OLEIC ACID WITH BACK-CROSSING AND MARKER-ASSISTED SELECTION

Location: Soybean and Nitrogen Fixation Research

2012 Annual Report

1a.Objectives (from AD-416):
1. Developed soybean lines with increased oil content and improved fatty acid composition while maintaining protein content at 41.5% (36% @ 13% moisture, i.e. 48% protein meal) and maintaining or increasing yield in MG VII and VIII soybeans.

2. Provide DNA marker assisted selection services for breeders in Arkansas, Georgia, Missouri, North Carolina and Tennessee at the University of Georgia Soybean Laboratory.

1b.Approach (from AD-416):
Utilize classical methods of plant breeding and molecular tools available to accelerate the development of breeding material with higher oil concentration and improved fatty acid profiles.

3.Progress Report:

This project is related to Objective 2 of the in-house project: To discover novel genes/alleles in soybean for seed composition, determine their inheritance, determine genomic location, transfer to adapted germplasm, and release.

This new research project is a continuation of the research project 6645-21220-012-38S and has been active only since April 1, 2012. Additional crosses have been made to incorporate the low linolenic and high oleic traits into advanced breeding lines. High stearic lines developed at USDA-ARS in Raleigh, have been added to our crossing program.
