1a.Objectives (from AD-416):
1) Evaluate strobulurins, trazoles, and traditional fungicides and conbinations of fungicides for their activity against Aspergillus (A.) flavus and their effect on aflatoxin produciton.. 2)Determine optimum rate and timing of application of Afla-Guard. . 3)fungicide and Afla Guard interactions NOTE: All trials will be carried to yield and concentrations of aflatoxin will be determined from each plot. In addition, laboratory isolations will be made to determine the ratio of toxigenic and non-toxigenic Aspergillus flavus present from each plot and the potential interaction with fungicide products.
1b.Approach (from AD-416):
Evaluate the efficacy of Afla-Guard in at least five Mississippi Delta field sites, at three application rates and several application times, on side-by-side irrigated and non-irrigated corn. In laboratory and field trials the effect of fungicides on Aspergillus (A.) flavus will be measured.
The project is proceeding as anticipated. Corn was planted in five different locations in Mississippi Delta in Spring 2012. To determine optimum rate and timing of application of Afla-Guard. Three application timings were evaluated (V5, V10, and VT) for Afla-Guard and a V10 application timing for K49 were used. Two rates of applications were 10 lbs per acre and 20 lbs per acre. Corn will be harvested in late August and analyzed for aflatoxin contamination and fungal infection. Final report will be submitted to the board and to each investigator in Fall 2012/Winter 2013. Monitoring of this project continues through frequent visits, telephone and e-mail communications.
