CHESAPEAKE BAY WATERSHED SCIENCE ADVISOR
Pasture Systems & Watershed Management Research
2013 Annual Report
1a.Objectives (from AD-416):
Provide funding for a Chesapeake Bay Watershed (CBW) Science Advisor to help address critical needs of NRCS by providing science based leadership and expert advice on air quality, water quality and nutrient management issues associated with the application of organic and inorganic fertilizers to agricultural fields through the CBW.
1b.Approach (from AD-416):
Individual within the MU has been selected for a detail with NRCS to serve as Science Advisor for the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. The detail has been approved by the NAA Director and ONP. As Science Advisor, individual will work with NRCS leadership to identify agricultural practices with the best potential to contribute to water quality remediation in the bay watershed. Funds will be provided by NRCS to allow the individual's research to continue during the detail and will allow the unit to provide temporary technical support staff and fee-based sample analysis to continue research progress on the project during the detail.
A report summarizing recommendations for new conservation practices and improved targeting of existing practices is currently being drafted. Data are being accumulated to facilitate computer simulations to evaluate multiple scenarios for the implementation of BMPs within NRCS Showcase Watersheds and potential impact of new conservation practices. Because of the broad scope and complicated interactions of factors impacting conservation needs across the Chesapeake Bay Watershed.
