1a.Objectives (from AD-416):
The objective of this cooperative research project is to determine if there is heritable variation among diverse orchardgrass entries for choke infection and resistance.
1b.Approach (from AD-416):
Collaborative field research will occur in sites in the Willamette Valley in western Oregon, including the research farm of Barenburg USA, other orchardgrass seed growers in the Corvallis area, and the Oregon State University Hyslop Research Farm. Seedling germination and preparation, and studies using greenhouse and laboratory work, will occur in the USDA-ARS FRRL location in Logan, UT. Plants will be maintained for three years, whereupon the choke infection will be visually assessed and seed harvest taken.
The main objective of this NFCA is to Evaluate choke incidence in two replicated field trials in the Willamette Valley, Oregon. The FRRL designed the trials, selected the plant materials, and coordinated with coopertor to: (1) monitor flowering time of the orchardgrass, (2) score choke incidence upon heading stage of development, and (3) identify choke tolerance/resistance if present. The goal is to identify possible choke tolerance/resistance among orchardgrass cultivars, wildland accessions, and breeding lines in a field setting.
During FY-2013: The cooperator is primarily responsible for field management and data collection while the FRRL designed the experiment and plant materials and determined how to assay traits. Within FY2013, the cooperator and FRRL established both field sites and collected heading dates for the entries. Although only the first year after establishment, preliminary choke incidence was recorded. Evaluations will occur in the coming years. FRRL and the cooperator also submitted a small grant proposal to the Oregon Seed Trade Association to help fund the travel and data collection.
