Research Project: Carrot Improvement for Organic Agriculture with Added Grower and Consumer Value

Location: Vegetable Crops Research Unit

2013 Annual Report

1a.Objectives (from AD-416):
Evaluate carrot breeding stocks for production in organic agriculture systems under weed pressure in diverse growing locations.

1b.Approach (from AD-416):
a) Evaluate carrots with elite nematode and alternaria resistance for ability to grow in a weedy field.

b) Grow diverse carrots with disease and pest resistance and evaluate top growth.

c) Measure the effect weeds have on carrot crop production.

3.Progress Report:

This project was renumbered from 3655-21000-048-42A to 3655-21000-062-16A. Evaluation of top growth was included in field trials at all four trialing locations in both organic and conventional fields. While environment influenced top size for a given environment, the relative ranking among genotypes remained quite stable regardless of environment. Weed competitiveness will be evaluated in the third and fourth year of this project. This research relates to objective 1 in evaluating carrot growth and response to weeds.
