Research Project: BREEDING LOCALLY-ADAPTED PULSE CROPS FOR ENHANCED YIELD AND SEED QUALITIES

Location: Tropical Crops and Germplasm Research

Project Number: 6635-21000-048-08
Project Type: General Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jun 01, 2012
End Date: Dec 31, 2013

Objective:
To develop a diversity panel (ADP) of about 400 Andean common bean germplasms specifically suited to African countries for evaluation of desired traits that will be made available to the broader common bean improvement community; and to test this panel and additional biparental populations for abiotic and biotic stress tolerance traits.

Approach:
A panel of diverse common bean germplasm specific to the Andean lineage will be developed. The panel will serve as a tool for studying important biotic and abiotic traits in Feed the Future (FTF) countries (Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda), while not excluding others (Angola). Characterization of specific traits of importance in FTF countries will be carried out on the ADP population as well as on bi-parental populations.
