1a.Objectives (from AD-416):
Evaluate new soft wheat cultivars from Monsanto Company.
1b.Approach (from AD-416):
Monsanto will provide harvested wheat grain to the ARS scientists. All grain will be milled and processed for analytical analysis.
We received and tested grain samples of 45 and 23 soft wheat cultivars for extensive end-use quality evaluation, and 102 and 216 soft wheat cultivars for narrow scale screening tests in 2011 and 2012, respectively. For the extensive quality evaluation, we determined grain characteristics, milling performance, flour composition and biochemical properties and sugar-snap cookie baking potential. For the screening tests, we performed grain characterization, milling and flour biochemical property tests. We collected, summarized and analyzed the quality data, and wrote quality evaluation summaries.
This project addresses objective 4 of the parent project: Define soft wheat quality targets and measure eastern U.S. soft wheat breeding materials against those targets for the breeding programs and the milling industry.
