Research Project: VALIDATION/REVISION OF THE OHIO PHOSPHORUS RISK INDEX USING FIELD-SCALE, EDGE-OF-FIELD MONITORING DATA

Location: Soil Drainage Research

2012 Annual Report

1a.Objectives (from AD-416):
Quantify edge-of-field phosphorus losses following changes in management.

1b.Approach (from AD-416):
Using automated samplers and control volumes we will instrument and measure hydrology and water quality from edge-of-field sites in Ohio. The sites will be representative of crop production practices throughout Ohio. The data will be used to evaluate (validate) the current Ohio Phosphorus Index.

3.Progress Report:

Progress continues to be made on setting up edge-of-field (EOF) sites to document the impacts of different land management practices. Plans have been made to utilize data from our current EOF sites for this project. Soils data from all sites has been collected and a management input data form created to assist farmers to capture the production inputs. Contacts have been made in the Western Lake Erie Basin to identify additional EOF sites in that watershed. The work and progress associated with this project supports objective 1 of the parent project, specifically sub-objective 1a: Quantify the influence of conservation practices on surface discharge and water chemistry in the agricultural landscape and sub-objective 1b: Conduct field and watershed-scale studies of hydrology, nutrient, and agrichemical contributions originating from subsurface drainage.
