Research Project: DEMONSTRATION OF INTEGRATED FARMING SYSTEMS THAT ENHANCE SOYBEAN PRODUCTIVITY ON MARGINAL LANDS AT AG PROGRESS DAYS FARM SHOWS

Location: Soil Drainage Research

2012 Annual Report

1a.Objectives (from AD-416):
To demonstrate a novel cropping management system based on holistic approaches which include no-tillage, cover crop and gypsum soil amendment to enhance soil quality, crop productivity, and environmental sustainability for U.S. soybean farmers.

1b.Approach (from AD-416):
Establish demo plots of the soybean production innovations (including gypsum applications, tillage, rotations, and cover crops) at major farm and equipment shows including Ag Progress Days in Pennsylvania. Project personnel will staff these shows to share the benefits of the agronomic management practices and their positive impact on soil quality and climate change.

3.Progress Report:

Activities conducted for this Specific Cooperative Agreement contribute directly to Sub-Objective 2a of the parent project: Evaluate no-till, soil amendment, and cover crop practices as compared to conventional management practices for improving crop yield and soil/water quality in intermittently wet soils. Demonstration plots were created at the AG Progress Days site, gypsum was applied to the appropriate areas, corn and soybeans were planted. Signage has been prepared to guide visitors to understand the demonstration and its goals.
