2012 Annual Report 1a.Objectives (from AD-416): Further develop North American Plant Collections Consortium (NAPCC) of the American Public Gardens Association (APGA). 1b.Approach (from AD-416): Evaluate and approve new collections, train site reviewers, promote high standards of plant collections management, and work with National Plant Germplasm System (NPGS) curators to coordinate germplasm preservation and targeted new acquisitions with curators of NAPCC collections. 3.Progress Report: Funding has been provided to help support the development and management of germplasm maintained by the APGA/NAPCC and by working closely with ARS in planning, developing, sharing, and managing the NAPCC data. Several new collections were added to the NAPCC in 2012. These include: the Boyce Thompson Arboretum (Quercus); Cheekwood Botanical Gardens (Cornus); Minnesota Landscape Arboretum (Grasses and Pinus); Naples Botanical Garden (Plumeria); Donald E. Davis Arboretum at Auburn University (Quercus); Reiman Gardens at Iowa State (Buck roses); and a multisite magnolia collection held by the Atlanta Botanical Garden, Bartlett Tree Research Laboratories Arboretum, Gardens of the Big Bend, Univ of Fl/IFAS North Florida Research & Education Center, Hoyt Arboretum, JC Raulston Arboretum, Morton Arboretum, Powell Gardens, Quarryhill Botanical Garden, San Francisco Botanical Garden, South Carolina Botanical Garden, University of California Botanical Garden, University of British Columbia Botanic Garden and Plant Research Centre, and VanDusen Botanical Garden. There are currently 61 participating institutions in NAPCC including 55 single institution collections and 3 multisite collections (Acer, 11 sites; Quercus, 20 sites; Magnolia, 14 sites). The NAPCC Manager works with the WLPGR Curator, and is supported by approximately 100 public garden professionals volunteering time and expertise. In-kind support of land, expertise, facilities, labor, equipment, collections is estimated to be ~$2M. This new 5-year SCA was put in place. It focuses on increasing collaboration with the broader National Plant Germplasm System community in collections development, germplasm storage, exchange/importation of new material, and increased awareness of NAPCC collections as a potential resource for the NPGS community. NAPCC/USNA stakeholder meeting was held on November 16, 2011. The goal of the meeting was to bring those involved in the development and management of NAPCC together with the USNA leadership in order to continue the collaboration after the establishment of a new 5 year SCA.
