Research Project: EXPANDED PLANTINGS AND DOCUMENTATION OF NATIVE FRUITS AND NUTS AT THE AGRICULTURE UNIVERSITY OF TIRANA

Location: National Germplasm Resources

2012 Annual Report

1a.Objectives (from AD-416):
To fund a benefit-sharing project in Albania for providing access to U.S. scientists to their plant genetic resources. To fund the Floristic expertise and Translator components of the joint U.S.-Albania plant exploration in Albania for temperate and subtropical, cultivated and wild, fruits and nuts scheduled for September 2011.

1b.Approach (from AD-416):
Funds will be used to expand the collection of fruits and nuts in the plantings of the Agriculture University of Tirana to include germplasm collected during the 2011 Joint U.S. – Albania Plant Exploration for Fruits and Nuts. Also supported is the documentation of this and other native germplasm in botanical and conservation databases in Albania.

3.Progress Report:

During FY 12, the Albanian share of the fruit and nut germplasm and associated documentation collected in the 2011 joint U.S.-Albania plant exploration was transferred to the Albanian genebank by the cooperator. A subset of the above germplasm was also propagated by the cooperator for eventual inclusion in the horticultural plantings at the Agricultural University of Tirana. A project to translate documents on traditional fruits and nuts of Albania from Albanian into English was also initiated by the cooperator.
